Mehvish<br />
Its been almost two years since you developed an app called Dial Kashmir, so how people have accepted it and how successful the project has been in India?<br />
<br />
The app is targeted at my own people (the people of Jammu and Kashmir) and those who intend to visit the valley. Irrespective of the section of the society at which this app is targeted, People from all walks of life appreciated my work. And when people appreciate your work, it gives you so much to cheer about. I have been recognised for the app. I also received some awards for it. The app has more than 20000 downloads on play store.<br />
<br />
Did you face any problem in launching it as being a woman?<br />
<br />
No. Nothing as such. I haven’t faced any biases towards me.<br />
<br />
How your own state has helped you in this journey ?<br />
<br />
I developed this app as a part of Online Learning Program. It is an individual project. It has got nothing to do with the State government.<br />
<br />
Even today we find very few girls in the field of Engineering, but you are an inspiration for those girls who still find difficult to deal with this mindset up. What message you have for them on this women’s day?<br />
<br />
Girls should not limit themselves to certain professions. Technology is one such profession which is more feasible for girls. It lets you explore new possibilities and opportunities. Just because technology seems to be a man’s domain, does not mean it is. No matter what field you are in, if you are good at something you will excel. Believe in your work and yourself.<br />
<br />
What does women’s day mean to you?<br />
<br />
Women’s Day for me is a celebration of womanhood and taking pride in being a woman. I think every woman must be proud of who she is and celebrate herself and her being everyday in her own way.<br />

From HT Brunch, November 30</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
Even as you’re reading this, winds of change are blowing across India. From places as busy as Mumbai, as faraway as Erode and as troubled as Kashmir, great new ideas are sprouting, promising a better tomorrow, making us proud. Our nation of jugaad is taking a giant leap forward – inventing, adapting and creating bold new ways to make your everyday life easier.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
We scouted the length and breadth of the country to find the brightest innovations, and roped in author and entrepreneur Rashmi Bansal to pick the ones with the most promise. This is a list that is as diverse as it’s ingenious. They’ve already inspired us to dream big – in full-HD, actually! Now it’s your turn…</div>

<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
Compost is not sexy. Rich socialites don’t throw charity dinners to Save The Earthworms and waste management is not the stuff of Miss World speeches. That’s why Poonam Bir Kasturi is important.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
<img alt="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg6b.jpg" src="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg6b.jpg" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; height: auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
The NID graduate gave up a career in marketing and designing industrial products to start Daily Dump in 2006. The enterprise makes simple products that can turn your garbage into compost, reducing landfills, easing the load on municipal agencies and helping your backyard or balcony get a lot greener in the process.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
<img align="right" alt="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg7a.jpg" src="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg7a.jpg" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; height: auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" />It’s not rocket science. Use their three-tier Kambha in a corner of your verandah. Dump kitchen waste (potato peels, leftovers, apple cores) plus their compost mixer in the top vessel until full. Swap the first and second vessel and dump anew as the matter in the first vessel decomposes.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
After a while (14 days for a household-sized unit) the stuff in your first vessel will have shrunk by half and be ready for the bottom pot, where it can start turning into manure for your garden. No stink, no flies, no additional costs, no sweat. “It’s very easy to use, convenient and everyone in the family, including your kids can use it,” says Kasturi proudly.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
Daily Dump does in your home what communities and governments across the world are struggling to do with the large volumes of waste they are, well, “dumped” with. Kasturi and her team have created their entire range of products from scratch and also have models for groups and neighbourhoods.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
<span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #804000; font-size: medium;"><em style="box-sizing: border-box;">Status:</em></span></span>Daily Dump products are already available on dailydump.org, which has comprehensive instructions and tips for composting. Products are priced starting Rs 700. The latest invention is called the Aaga, a huge pot, meant for hotels, schools and offices. Available online from January 2015.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
<span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #0080ff; font-size: medium;">A ride-sharing app that’s actually safe</span><span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: small;"><em style="box-sizing: border-box;">Idea: Let’s Ride<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />Brainchild of: Rajkumar Mundel, Praveen Mane and Averi Pal Choudhuri</em></span></span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
Imagine you woke up one hour before an important meeting and missed your bus. Here’s an option that will be like hitching a ride with a friend, perhaps a new one. Let’s Ride, a free web app, is a platform for people to connect so they can carpool their way to work or college.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
<img align="middle" alt="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg12i.jpg" src="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg12i.jpg" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; height: auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
Log on to the Website (letsride.in), fill in your daily commute details and mention if you are a car owner and how many passengers you are ready to take on and the price you wish to charge. If you are a passenger, it will connect you with people going to your destination.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
<img align="right" alt="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg7c.jpg" src="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg7c.jpg" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; height: auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" />Launched in 2013 by three Pune engineers, Let’s Ride is different mainly because it taps into your existing social circles. It lets you share rides with people who have similar interests, are from your locality or work in the same office area.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
There is a chat option for you to connect with the person offering you the ride. “Our site also links you to the social profiles of the users so that you can look them up and be sure of your safety,” says founder Rajkumar Mundel.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
<span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #0080ff; font-size: medium;"><em style="box-sizing: border-box;">Status:</em></span></span>The site has more than 11,000 participants in Pune and 6,000 users in other cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai and Delhi. The fare for the ride is directly given to the car owner by passengers.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
<em style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: medium;">In other cities</span><span style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #0080ff;">SmartMumbaikar:</span></span></em>Ten minutes before you need a ride, give a missed call to the number the site provides. The site connects you to other users on the same route so you can carpool. It will soon be available as an app.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
<span style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #0080ff;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;"><em style="box-sizing: border-box;">RidingO:</em></span></span>In Bangalore, sign up on this application with your corporate email ID or use your Linkedin.com profile and share rides with people who live and work in the same locality as you.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
<span style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #ff8000; font-size: medium;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;"><img align="right" alt="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg8c.jpg" src="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg8c.jpg" height="275" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; height: auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" width="222" />A washing machine that fits in your bucket</span></span><em style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;">Idea: Econowash<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />Brainchild of: Piyush Agarwalla</span></em></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
Washing machines are bulky and expensive. That’s why this one, which clamps on to your bucket, plugs in, and gets to work for just Rs 2,499, is a good idea. It works much like an oversized blender, recreating in your bucket the same effect as a larger, more conventional washer. You save water, electricity, money and space – and God knows those resources are precious.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
Mumbai resident Piyush Agarwalla studied engineering in the US, and has always had an entrepreneurial streak. The idea for a bucket-fitted laundry device came to him when he saw a 40-year-old photo showing something similar, but bigger, from Bulgaria, on the Web. He made it more compact and easy to use.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
<img align="right" alt="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg8a.jpg" src="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg8a.jpg" height="167" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; height: auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" width="180" />He says bachelors and campers are the ones most interested in the Econowash, but he hopes to manufacture it primarily for the poor.<br />
<span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;"><em style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #ff8000;">Status:</span></em></span>Available on eBay India. The Econowash is crowdfunded but Agarwalla is being approached by investors interested in mass production. “If we produce it in lakhs, it will cost Rs 1,500,” he says. “It’s one thing to make money. But as my mother said, ‘It’s better to make money and help people along the way’.”</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
<span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box; color: green; font-size: medium;">Software that prevents stampedes</span><em style="box-sizing: border-box;">Idea: Controlling stampede using image analysis technology<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><img align="right" alt="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg08a.jpg" src="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg08a.jpg" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; height: auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" />Brainchild of: Pavin Kumar, S Vidyasagar, A Ramesh and KT Venkateshan</em></span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
If you are scared of crowds, you will love what these four students of Kongu Engineering College in Erode, Tamil Nadu, have devised. Their programme can sense crowd density by analysing images from a security camera.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
“It then tells us which parts of a place (like temples or big festivals like the Kumbh) are likely to get more crowded and prone to stampedes,” says S Vidyasagar. “This makes it easier for the police to control the crowd and prevent them.”</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
A computer fed with the software and linked to the CCTVs lights up the areas that are prone to more footfall per square foot on its screen. So the officials manning the computer know where to direct help.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
<img align="right" alt="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg08b.jpg" src="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg08b.jpg" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; height: auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" />“We aim to have the programme send a direct signal to the walkie-talkie of the officials manning the ground.” Imagine how much safer we would be if they used this programme at a music festival or the Pride parade.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
<span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;"><em style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box; color: green;">Status:</span></em></span>The boys are seeking funding for further testing, and conducting practical experiments. “If we get it up and running, it can really make a difference,” says Vidyasagar.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
<span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: medium;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #004080;">A toilet that needs no plumbing</span></span><em style="box-sizing: border-box;">Idea: The Banka Bioloo<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />Brainchild of: Namita Banka</em></span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
NID graduate Namita Banka, 41, had been working with the Indian Railways to solve its sanitation problems on trains when she came across the bioloo technology on India’s Defence Research & Development Organisation web site.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
<img align="right" alt="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg8b.jpg" src="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg8b.jpg" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; height: auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" />“I was organising a women’s fair in Hyderabad and we wanted an organic toilet, but every company who makes it, sells it for Rs 4 lakhs a unit. There was a need for an affordable one.” So she adapted the DRDO technology and now makes bioloos from recast concrete cement which cost only Rs 25,000.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
This is how it works: the bathrooms are fitted with a bio tank, which collects the waste and treats it with bacteria so it’s converted into biogas (which can be used as fuel) and water (which can be recycled or discarded).</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
This means no clogging, and no waste on railway tracks, which, reports say, was corroding the rails. Banka also installs loos at construction sites, schools and colleges.</div>

How about some killer technology from the US and German army? A blanket treated with a chemical that paralyses and kills any mosquito foolish enough to come close. And no, it doesn’t smell, cause a reaction or harm the user. It just soldiers on as you sleep.</div>

Textile design student Kasturi was working at her father’s home-furnishings firm when she discovered that army uniforms in the West were being treated with mosquito repellents.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
“I was shocked nobody was using it anywhere,” she says. She teamed up with her sister, Shreya (a marriage counsellor) to develop a blanket that could be treated with the same chemical and Mos-Quit-O was born.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
The Poddar girls have run safety tests at WHO-certified labs to ensure their blanket won’t trigger allergies. “A young mother just bought it for her child,” says Shreya. “It’s safe for everyone.”</div>

<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
The Mitticool Fridge doesn’t need electricity. Instead it runs on a simple principle – when clay comes in contact with water, it drops 10 degrees in temperature. Potter Mansukh Prajapati’s invention uses 10 litres of water to cool down its terracotta clay body to keep a steady temperature of 10 to 15 degrees.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
This makes it ideal to store fruits and vegetables for five to eight days. Milk products can last up to 24 hours in the fridge and it doesn’t need a replacement for 10 years.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
<img align="middle" alt="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg11a.jpg" src="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg11a.jpg" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; height: auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
Prajapati’s idea for Mitticool came out of a tragedy. In the aftermath of the 2001 Gujarat earthquake, the Rajkot resident saw a picture of his pots, now broken, in a local newspaper with a caption that read: “Broken fridge of the poor”.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
<img align="right" alt="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg11c.jpg" src="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg11c.jpg" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; height: auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" />Since he used to sell clay tawas and water coolers in his village of Wankaner, he started thinking that if a clay pot could work as a cooler, maybe a fridge based on the same principle could work too.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
He took a loan of Rs 3 lakh, and after a lot of research, the Mitticool was born. It has since won him a National Award.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">

<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">

Mehvish Mushtaq Hakak’s Dial Kashmir contains over 500 contacts of government departments and numbers of private hospitals, fire brigades and all essential and non-essential services.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
The 24-year-old inventor has described the application as “a virtual Yellow Pages”, and hers is perhaps the only state that has an application like this. In 2013, Hakak took a course on Android application development and created Dial Kashmir as a part of the course.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
To make it user friendly, the directory is divided into two categories – essential and commercial, with sections such as education, fire services, gas agencies, government offices, hospitals, electronics, NGOs and so on. It also lets you find pincodes, railway timings, public holidays and prayer timings.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
The daughter of a forest officer and a homemaker, Hakak always dreamed of using technology for the greater good. She recounts recent feedback from a customer, who spotted an animal carcass floating down the Jhelum, got on the app, and found the number of the Srinagar Municipal Council.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
<img align="right" alt="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg12g.jpg" src="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg12g.jpg" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; height: auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" />The result: the carcass was cleaned up by the officials speedily. “In Kashmir, finding contacts is not an easy task as the official sites may not be working,” she says.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
Dial Kashmir sounds like a model for the rest of India.</div>

<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
When she designed a school that would give physically challenged kids the same access as others for her final-year Architecture project, Shanu Sharma realised there was a need for a product that helped a disabled person feel included in all environments.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
<img alt="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg12c.jpg" src="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg12c.jpg" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; height: auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
Sharma, now studying industrial design at IIT Kanpur, designed the Vardaan, a wheelchair that can climb stairs. Its three-pronged wheels work on the same principle as the human foot: heel first, then toe.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
<img align="right" alt="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg12h.jpg" src="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg12h.jpg" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; height: auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" />“I watched how a child climbed stairs by hauling himself up and down. A lever drags the wheel in the same way,” she says. Sharma received funding from the Indian government’s Department of Science and Technology and has now designed another wheelchair that can run on the ground as well as climb stairs.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">

“Right now, I need a collaboration with an R&D firm that can help me improve this design, which has its flaws (it needs a disabled person with good upper-body strength to operate it). Once it’s foolproof, I want to make sure it doesn’t cost more than Rs 20,000.”</div>

<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
Architecture student Shahbaz Shamsi knew that if he had to get people to care about their trash, he had to offer them a reward. “It’s all about motivation,” he says, laughing. And so he started Wasteplus.in.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
<img alt="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg07b.jpg" src="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg07b.jpg" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; height: auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
The premise is simple: for every two kgs of trash you give the Wasteplus employees who come to your doorstep to collect it, you earn 1 point. Collect points, exchange them for gifts. 100 points can get you a mixer-grinder, and other incentives include hot plates and groceries.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
Shamsi then recycles the trash – 500 plastic bottles are turned into yarn, mixed with polyester and sold to cloth companies. The profit made from the recycling process is then used to fund the rewards for Wasteplus. Shamsi has also employed ragpickers from <img align="right" alt="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg07a.jpg" src="http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/popup/2014/11/3011brpg07a.jpg" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; height: auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" />the streets to segregate the waste collected, and says, “This is a way to empower the ragpickers, as they now have a legitimate job.”</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
Since their pilot project launched in Mumbai in October this year, Shamsi has 1,000 families onboard and has collected 4,000 kilos of waste. That’s a whole lot of garbage not being tossed out the window into the street.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
<span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;"><em style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box; color: red;">Status:</span></em></span>“We are funding this through the profits we get after recycling the waste and we plan to cover all of Mumbai,” says Shamsi. <span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;"><em style="box-sizing: border-box;"></em>These ideas will change you</span>It’s a very different India we live in today – one that sorely needs creative minds to give it that extra push towards tomorrow. We have always had engineers and doctors but it’s time we had a bunch of out-of-the-box thinkers who can create and innovate to build a world that’s different.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
We were struck by how all the inventors and innovators we spoke to, young and old, were not doing this to make a quick buck, but to just make our cities more liveable. They wanted to do something “that will change the world”, as the inventor of the mosquito repellent blanket Kasturi Poddar said.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 25px;">
But we knew we would need expert help to pick the ones doing truly good work. And that’s why we got author and motivational speaker Rashmi Bansal on board to curate our list. Along with giving her stamp of approval, she offered advice on how to make the ideas sustainable. Because that’s what will make them truly successful. Get ready to get inspired.</div>

MEHVISH MUSHTAQ<br />
“I don’t want to be a second someone, I want to be the first me.” So says 23-year-old Mehvish Mushtaq’s About.me page. A BE student in computer science, the driven tech geek is the creator of the Dial Kashmir Android app, a database of detailed information—addresses, phone numbers and email IDs—on essential services and relevant government departments like healthcare, education, transport and police, among others, in Kashmir.<br />
<br />
Mehvish, a Srinagar local, is the first Kashmiri to develop an Android app. It was her love of technology that drove her to take on a one-month course in application development, and her subsequent project of creating a database for the Valley. And with 10,000 plus downloads on Google Play, it appears that the app has been exceedingly popular with locals and tourists alike. Not content with developing Kashmir’s virtual yellow pages directory, Mehvish dreams about starting a software company for dynamic young Kashmiri innovators, well aware of the hurdles and limited opportunities they must contend with.<br />

If there is paradise on earth, it is here, it is here, it is here...said Amir Khusrow, Sufi musician, poet and scholar about Kashmir. Eons ago Kashmir conjured up images of beauty — Dal Lake, boat houses and snow capped mountains. But now, Kashmir has become synonymous with turmoil. That's why Mehvish Mushtaq is like a breath of fresh air. She is the first Kashmiri to develop an Android app — Dial Kashmir, which has become an almost mandatory application to have on one's smartphone in Kashmir that has a population of around five million. She says she created the app with an aim to facilitate communication processes within the Kashmiri society.</span><br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: georgia; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px;">Is there a lane that leads to your house that is water logged because a pipe burst, and you are clueless as to how to get in touch with the local municipal department? There's a fire that needs to be put out? You need to contact a hospital or a newspaper office or get a gas cylinder delivered? These might seem like simple tasks in a city like Bangalore. But in a conflict-ridden Kashmir such problems take on a different hue. Step in Dial Kashmir, which is now into its fifth version, with Mushtaq working on the sixth. </span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: georgia; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px;">Mushtaq who graduated in Engineering (Computer Science) describes herself as a tech savvy person. "Technology has always fascinated me." In the winter of 2013, she did an online course on Android application development. As a part of the course, she was supposed to make an app. "I decided to develop something that would be useful to the local people," she says. "The fact that whenever someone needed a contact number of a particular service, the process to obtain the information was not easy; sometimes the official sites were broken and sometimes you couldn't find the number at all. All this motivated me to create the app."</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: georgia; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px;">Dial Kashmir (a name suggested by her best friend) caters specifically to the Kashmir region. It gives users extensive information such as addresses, phone numbers and email ids of essential and commercial services in various sectors. In addition to that it also includes features such as prayer timings, railway timings, a flashlight, pin codes, ISD code etc. The app first become operational on February 28, 2013.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: georgia; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px;">Mushtaq, now known as the Android girl, has been getting "appreciative" mails from all over the country. She says the app has not contributed much "materially. But the success gave me confidence and made me more outspoken." And a new beginning and something to rejoice — for everyone who is bombarded with news about a troubled Kashmir at the other end.</span><br />

<strong>Meet Mehvish Mushtaq, the first Kashmiri girl to develop an Android app dedicated to the state of Jammu & Kashmir.</strong><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://im.rediff.com/getahead/2014/jun/04mehvish-mushtaq.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://im.rediff.com/getahead/2014/jun/04mehvish-mushtaq.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<strong><br /></strong></div>
<div style="font-family: georgia; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-size: 36px;">W</span>hen she wanted to telephone a cousin's school some years ago, Mehvish Mushtaq was lost.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
The school's website was down.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
She didn't have a phone book handy and there weren't any directory services that could help her with it.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
After considerable search, that included calling up the cousin's classmates, she finally got the number.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
Then there were occasions when a hospital's number wasn't easy to come by.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
Each time a situation arose, she would scramble for information.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
Mehvish Mushtaq stays in Srinagar where information isn't easy to come by.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
Telephone numbers and contact details are available but they remain scattered online.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
So when as part of an online course on Android application development, Mehvish Mushtaq was required to create an app, she knew just what she wanted to make.<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div style="font-family: georgia; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
"There was an urgent need for an app that made available all the relevant information at one place. When the assignment was handed to me, I thought to myself: 'Why not make something useful?'" she says.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
Dial Kashmir lists out everything there is to know about Jammu & Kashmir -- from phone numbers and addresses of essential services and tourist attractions to contact details of local business and prayer timings.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
An update even has a gallery featuring breathtaking photographs of everything from the Char Chinar to the Dal Lake and Kashmir at its glorious best in spring.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
With this, the 22-year-old has become the first Kashmiri girl to have developed an Android app.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
It has also made Mushtaq something of a celebrity not just in Kashmir but also online.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
A user, Nisar Sofi, gushes about it on the Google Playstore page: 'This is an awesome application I have ever seen. (I) love this application (...) no words to mention, very interesting and useful.'</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
But Mushtaq still seems to be the girl next door, shy, not very media savvy and a woman of (very) few words.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
None of her responses go beyond a couple of sentences:</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
How has the feedback to Dial Kashmir been?</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
"Overwhelming!"</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
You are an inspiration to many of us. In what light do you see yourself?</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
"I am humbled... It makes me push harder to achieve something more."</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
But sitting behind a computer screen, somewhere in Srinagar, Mehvish Mushtaq has been quietly and patiently chipping away, making the app more user friendly, ironing out the creases, removing the bugs...</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
When you insist on her elaborating on her response about the feedback she's received, Mushtaq doesn't talk about the glittering function in Mumbai where she was recently felicitated.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
Instead, she recounts the time when someone was able to track down the number of a government official or that other time when someone else was able to contact the municipal corporation to remove a dead animal from the street using her app.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
Those, she suggests, are the achievements that really matter.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">

<strong>SRINAGAR — </strong>A Kashmiri girl who shot to fame in Kashmir Valley for developing an Android application, has been shortlisted for L’Oreal Paris Femina Women Awards 2014.<br />
The yearly awards are given to women for ‘remarkable’ achievements. Mehwish Mushtaq Hakaak, a resident of uptown Srinagar, was shortlisted in the ‘Online Influencer’ category.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
This comes almost a year after Mehwish, an ambitious computer engineer and an Android application developer created history by being the first Kashmiri to have developed a ‘Kashmir centric’ Android application which she named ‘Dial Kashmir’.<br />
‘Dial Kashmir’ contains contact details of many government and private departments and acts as a ‘mobile telephone directory’. <br />
Mehvish, 23, has done her Bachelors from SSM College OF Engineering and Technology (BE Computer Science). <br />
A week back, announcing the awards, Femina group shortlisted Mehwish’s name in this year’s awards category. <br />
The third edition of the L’Oreal Paris Femina Women Awards will be held on March 27, 2014, in Mumbai, and it will salute women with extraordinary accomplishments, outstanding leadership qualities and exceptional commitment to their careers and communities.<br />
However, the group announced that the awards will be based on the number of highest votes that have been casted online in favor of the shortlisted candidates. <br />
Mehwish has been shortlisted in the online category along with three other women including Meena Kandasamy, Swati Ramanathan and Priyanka Bose.<br />
The voting lines are open and the votes can be casted by logging into the website of Femina India.<br />
The awards were instituted in 2012 when Femina, India’s most read women’s magazine partnered with iconic beauty brand L’Oreal Paris.<br />
Announcing the awards, Tanya Chaitanya, Editor, Femina, said, “The L’Oreal Paris Femina Women Awards 2014 are an indication that, however small the beginnings, if a woman and her work affect even a few people in a life-changing manner, then she deserves to be recognised and applauded. Extraordinary stories, exemplary courage and the larger vision--this year’s names are an inspiration to all of us. Join the movement!”<br />
Other categories include Social Impact, Favorite Face of a Cause, Online Influencer, Science and Innovation, Films, Sports, Education, Business and Entrepreneurship, Business and Entrepreneurship, Music and Performing Arts, Design and Arts, Literary Contribution, Environment, Woman We Love, and Leadership.<br />
Talking to Authint mail, Mehwish appealed the people of Jammu and Kashmir to cast votes in her favor, a move she believes can bring the laurels to the state. Mehwish is the first girl from Jammu and Kashmir to have made it to these awards.<br />
“I am very thankful to almighty Allah, to have given me another chance to achieve one more feat in my career and this can only be possible when the people across the world cast votes in my favor,” she said.<br />

The project has been developed in Srinagar, <strong style="box-sizing: border-box; color: black; line-height: inherit;">a city of over 1.2 million people located in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir</strong>, and provides a very important service to the whole Kashmir area, which counts around 5 million people.</div>

We talked with Mehvish Mushtaq, the girl behind the whole project. Here’s what she told us.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<em style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: inherit;">– Hi Mehvish, let’s start with an introduction: where are you from, what do you do, and how did you life change after the success of your project?</em></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px 0px 0px 30px;">
Hi! I am from Srinagar, J&K. I have done my BE in Computer Science from SSM College of Engineering (Kashmir). Life changed a lot after Dial Kashmir happened. The response that I got from the users was pretty good. <strong style="box-sizing: border-box; color: black; line-height: inherit;">The app got attention from people from different walks of life</strong>: it felt good to be recognized for your work.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<img alt="Dial Kashmir" class="aligncenter" height="457" src="http://www.digitalintheround.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Dial-Kashmir1.png" style="box-sizing: border-box; clear: both; display: block; height: auto; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: top;" title="Dial Kashmir" width="526" /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<em style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: inherit;">– Let’s talk about Dial Kashmir: what was originally the target of the app, and how it evolved after the incredible international exposure?</em></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px 0px 0px 30px;">
The target of the app were and remain locals and tourists. It is not easy to locate numbers of different essential services (such as hospitals, <em style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: inherit;">editor’s note</em>) and commercial services, so I felt the need to create an app that would act as a database for all the contact details of both essential and commercial services,<strong style="box-sizing: border-box; color: black; line-height: inherit;">and benefit both locals and tourists</strong>. In addition to contact details, the app also includes pin codes, std codes, list of holidays, prayer timings for Kashmir.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<img alt="Mobile Kashmir" class="wp-image-4774 aligncenter" height="460" src="http://www.digitalintheround.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Mobile-Kashmir.png" style="box-sizing: border-box; clear: both; display: block; height: auto; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: top;" title="Mobile Kashmir" width="527" /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<em style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: inherit;">– What led you to choose Android vs. other operating systems?</em></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px 0px 0px 30px;">
Android is the most used operating system. More and more phones are moving towards Android now as it has a good user interface, provides a huge number of apps to download and is quite user friendly. Thus, I chose Android as its use is more widespread than other OS. <strong style="box-sizing: border-box; color: black; line-height: inherit;">I intended to make an app that many people could use</strong>, and Android served as a perfect platform for the same.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<em style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: inherit;">– The project is English-based: how many people speak English in the Kashmir area? How important is the knowledge of local languages and culture in communicating a product or a service in the area?</em></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px 0px 0px 30px;">
I have said it before in other interviews and I am saying it again: Kashmir is not as people think it is. <strong style="box-sizing: border-box; color: black; line-height: inherit;">There are a lot of people who speak in English here</strong>, a pretty good number.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px 0px 0px 30px;">
Knowledge of local language and culture is quite important in making something for the people of a place as you cannot make something for a certain area without knowing about the area. However, when it comes to marketing the local languages do play a major role but not as big a role as it is thought of. I marketed my app in English all the time and the response I got has been amazing.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<em style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: inherit;">– Dial Kashmir is active on Facebook, Twitter and WeChat: how important are social media in promoting such a service in Kashmir?</em></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px 0px 0px 30px;">
Kashmir has been a place of conflict but it is not backward, people are tech savvy. They use social networking sites just like any other place. The role of social networking sites has been a major one: I promoted my app on Facebook and Twitter, <strong style="box-sizing: border-box; color: black; line-height: inherit;">then gradually moved to instant messengers</strong>. Dial Kashmir owes a lot of its success to social media.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<img alt="Dial Kashmir Facebook" class="wp-image-4775 aligncenter" height="332" src="http://www.digitalintheround.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Dial-Kashmir-Facebook1.png" style="border: 1px solid black; box-sizing: border-box; clear: both; display: block; height: auto; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: top;" title="Dial Kashmir Facebook" width="563" /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<em style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: inherit;">– How many people have access to Internet in Kashmir? Do you think social media and mobile technologies are actually having an impact in society? </em></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px 0px 0px 30px;">
A pretty good number of people have access to the internet here. <strong style="box-sizing: border-box; color: black; line-height: inherit;">Social media and mobile technologies are having a good impact</strong>: it’s lessening the boundaries and bringing people closer by making them more connected.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<em style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: inherit;">– Last question: how do you see your future, after you became the “most popular Android developer in the Valley”?</em></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px 0px 0px 30px;">
“The Android girl ” as people call me <img alt=":)" class="wp-smiley" src="http://www.digitalintheround.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif" style="box-sizing: border-box; height: auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: top;" /></div>

Well it’s going to be based on further app development and improvement in Dial Kashmir. A lot can be done with Dial Kashmir, and I am focusing on that for now.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">

<em style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: inherit;">– Thanks a lot Mehvish!</em></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">

Kashmir is not usually present in our imaginations (or on our TV screens for that matter) for reasons other than militancy, bomb blasts, curfews, guerilla attacks, protests, firing on civilians, army crimes, so on and so forth (though occasionally the images of juicy red apples and snowy honey-moon spots makes it through!).</div>

Amidst the chaos and confusion, the women of Kashmir seem to be invisible. Except for the few who flash across our screens mourning for the loss of some dead loved one, Kashmiri women are almost completely absent from the public sphere. And hence the story of one Mehvish Mushtaq is a whiff of fresh air, after all the stench of blood and political games.</div>
<div style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #404040; font-family: 'open sans'; font-size: 18px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 20px; max-width: 100%;">
The self-titled “<em style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; box-sizing: border-box;">Android girl from Kashmir and for Kashmir</em>” was recently highlighted in various media platforms all over the country for being the first Kashmiri to develop an Android application. Her app called “<em style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; box-sizing: border-box;">Dial Kashmir</em>” is an attempt to help lessen the huge dearth of information and basic facilities faced by the people of the area. It is an ever-growing collection of contact information for various needs such as health, education etc. with over 500 contacts of government and private departments. Mehvish says that she felt the need for such a tool as she perceived that the people in the State always faced a huge problem when trying to get the contact numbers or addresses of many departments or institutions. One day as she was surfing Facebook, she saw an advertisement for a company that trained people in the development of Android apps. She clicked on the link, took the short course, worked hard on her own for two weeks – and the rest, as they say, is history. Mehvish, says that she hopes this is an example that the bright young men and women of Kashmir can make something of their lives staying in their native land itself, instead of having to move to different parts of the country in search of education and a better life. She herself has done a degree in Computer Science Engineering from Kashmir itself. In her own words: “<em style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; box-sizing: border-box;">I want to contribute to my motherland by staying right here. I do not want to move out of Kashmir, either to study or to work.</em>” (1)</div>
<div style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #404040; font-family: 'open sans'; font-size: 18px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 20px; max-width: 100%;">
The app and the initiative from Mehvish, have received wide applause and support from all over the country. It has a rating of 4.7 and thousands of downloads. Many people have left heart-warming comments and extended their best wishes, with some even calling for such an app to be developed for their State. Mehvish herself has been interviewed, written about and photographed by many media platforms. An impressive feat and inspiring act indeed, from an up-until-few-days-ago invisible Kashmiri girl.</div>
<div style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #404040; font-family: 'open sans'; font-size: 18px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 20px; max-width: 100%;">
Mehvish is an important symbol in many ways. She is a symbol of hope and inspiration for many Kashmiri youth, especially girls, to inspire them to follow their passions – even amidst armies and militants. She is a symbol to the rest of India that perhaps we need to give more public attention to the issue of Kashmir and the plight of Kashmiris, as who knows how many other ‘Mehvish-es’ exist in that beautiful land. She is a symbol for students of technology to use their knowledge and skills to contribute to society and help solve problems of common men and women, rather than just to earn a paycheck alone. She helps humanize Kashmiri people to the rest of the world, who have for too long looked at the land and the issue as just another war zone and a political stratagem, and the oppressed citizens as but necessary <em style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; box-sizing: border-box;">‘collateral damage’</em>.</div>
<div style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #404040; font-family: 'open sans'; font-size: 18px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 20px; max-width: 100%;">
Is her feat, one that addresses the basic issue of Kashmir and brings Kashmiris stability and freedom? Well, perhaps not. Is it one which is a source of pride and inspiration to all Kashmiris, Indians and women in general? It sure is! Well done Mehvish!</div>

<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
The <strong style="box-sizing: border-box; color: black; line-height: inherit;">mobile market in India is growing at a fast pace</strong>, as we showed on our recent report about <a href="http://www.digitalintheround.com/mobile-india-whatsapp-wechat-facebook/" style="-webkit-transition: color 0.2s linear; box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; line-height: inherit; transition: color 0.2s linear;" target="_blank">IM app users in the country</a>.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
But what’s more interesting are the social and digital trends emerging in this 1.2-billion-people giant, and <strong style="box-sizing: border-box; color: black; line-height: inherit;">the rise of mobile-based startups</strong>. Here we’ll show three mobile apps that have been recently launched in India:</div>
<ul style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.6; list-style-position: outside; margin: 0px 0px 17px 20px; padding: 0px;">
<li style="box-sizing: border-box; direction: ltr; font-size: 14px !important; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><strong style="box-sizing: border-box; color: black; line-height: inherit;">Dial Kashmir</strong>, a local information directory.</li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box; direction: ltr; font-size: 14px !important; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><strong style="box-sizing: border-box; color: black; line-height: inherit;">Traffline</strong>, a popular street traffic-related service.</li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box; direction: ltr; font-size: 14px !important; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><strong style="box-sizing: border-box; color: black; line-height: inherit;">Candidly</strong>, a cool photo sharing app.</li>
</ul>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<h2 style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: misoregular; font-size: 32px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 1.1; margin: 12px 0px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizelegibility; text-transform: uppercase;">
DIAL KASHMIR</h2>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
23-year-old Mehvish Mushtaqm is a young Kashmiri entrepreneur who is using technology – and her will for change – to bring a big help in her homeland. She in fact is the first Kashmiri woman to develop an android application.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<img alt="Dial Kashmire" class="aligncenter" height="345" src="http://www.digitalintheround.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Dial-Kashmire.jpg" style="box-sizing: border-box; clear: both; display: block; height: auto; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: top;" title="Dial Kashmire" width="504" /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
After an IT education and a web course about app development, she developed <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dial.kashmir&hl=en" style="-webkit-transition: color 0.2s linear; box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; line-height: inherit; transition: color 0.2s linear;" target="_blank">Dial Kashmir</a>, an app that provides detailed information about addresses, phone numbers and email IDs of local services, institutions and government departments in the Kashmir area.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
The app – which can be described as a “virtual Yellow Pages directory” – brings an essential service to an area which bases its economy mainly on agriculture, and counts <strong style="box-sizing: border-box; color: black; line-height: inherit;">over 5 million people across India and Pakistan</strong>.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
Dial Kashmir is being promoted through a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/dialkashmir" style="-webkit-transition: color 0.2s linear; box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; line-height: inherit; transition: color 0.2s linear;" target="_blank">Facebook Page</a>, and it also uses Twitter and WeChat as channels for support and business contact. The application has gained an average rating of 4.7 out of 5, with <strong style="box-sizing: border-box; color: black; line-height: inherit;">more than 10 thousand downloads on Google Play</strong>.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">

<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px; text-align: center;">

<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
In recent times several <a href="http://www.digitalintheround.com/social-media-india-digital-divide/" style="-webkit-transition: color 0.2s linear; box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; line-height: inherit; transition: color 0.2s linear;" target="_blank">digital-based projects in rural areas of India</a> have been able to gain international attention; the groundbreaking story of Mehvish turned her into a role-model for Kashmiri youths, and has been covered by <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/indiahome/indianews/article-2312542/Dial-Kashmir-Jammu-Kashmir-woman-develops-android-app-Valley.html" style="-webkit-transition: color 0.2s linear; box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; line-height: inherit; transition: color 0.2s linear;" target="_blank">The Daily Mail</a>.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<h2 style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: misoregular; font-size: 32px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 1.1; margin: 12px 0px; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizelegibility; text-transform: uppercase;">
TRAFFLINE</h2>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
All over the world an Israeli GPS-based app made a big hit: it’s called <a href="http://waze.com/" style="-webkit-transition: color 0.2s linear; box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; line-height: inherit; transition: color 0.2s linear;" target="_blank">Waze</a>, it was launched in Israel in 2008, and helps people to avoid street traffic.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
If there’s a place in the world where traffic jams are really heavy and stressful, this place is India, <strong style="box-sizing: border-box; color: black; line-height: inherit;">a country home to over 20 million cars</strong>.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
That’s why a group of Mumbai-based entrepreneurs developed <a href="http://www.traffline.com/" style="-webkit-transition: color 0.2s linear; box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; line-height: inherit; transition: color 0.2s linear;" target="_blank">Traffline</a>, a web-based project and smartphone app that helps users from big metropolitan area in the country – such as Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi – providing them<strong style="box-sizing: border-box; color: black; line-height: inherit;"> real-time info about traffic jams</strong>.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<img alt="Traffline India" class="wp-image-4353 aligncenter" height="235" src="http://www.digitalintheround.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Traffline-India.jpg" style="border: 1px solid black; box-sizing: border-box; clear: both; display: block; height: auto; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: top;" title="Traffline India" width="448" /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
Traffline also shows <strong style="box-sizing: border-box; color: black; line-height: inherit;">instantaneous details on the congestion</strong> such as processions, blocked vehicles or accidents, via a <strong style="box-sizing: border-box; color: black; line-height: inherit;">crowdsourced system of real-time information sharing</strong>. It also provides the numbers of local traffic police.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px; text-align: center;">
<img alt="Mobile App India" class="wp-image-4432 aligncenter" height="374" src="http://www.digitalintheround.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Mobile-App-India.png" style="border: 1px solid black; box-sizing: border-box; clear: both; display: block; height: auto; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: top;" title="Mobile App India" width="492" /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; direction: ltr; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px !important; line-height: 1.4; margin-bottom: 17px; padding: 0px;">
But what are users gaining by helping sharing info on the app? They can be rewarded with points that can be redeemed inside the application (more on <a href="http://www.buzzom.com/2013/12/traffline-smartphone-app-launched-gives-real-time-info-about-traffic-jams-in-india/" style="-webkit-transition: color 0.2s linear; box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; line-height: inherit; transition: color 0.2s linear;" target="_blank">Buzzom</a>).</div>

Here’s another app inspired to a global phenomenon. We are talking about <a href="http://candidly.deliverymagnet.com/" style="-webkit-transition: color 0.2s linear; box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; line-height: inherit; transition: color 0.2s linear;" target="_blank">Candidly,</a>a mobile app leveraging on the <strong style="box-sizing: border-box; color: black; line-height: inherit;">image-sharing apps trend that are taking over the Internet</strong> – like <a href="http://www.snapchat.com/%E2%80%8E" style="-webkit-transition: color 0.2s linear; box-sizing: border-box; color: #3d3d3d; line-height: inherit; transition: color 0.2s linear;" target="_blank">Snapchat</a>. So what makes it different? It gives <strong style="box-sizing: border-box; color: black; line-height: inherit;">new features such as collaborative shared photo albums</strong>, and a more immersive sharing of personal moments, voice messages and also 10-second videos.</div>

Living in Kashmir is fraught with difficulties, but it is time we become the change we want to see in the Valley,” says Mehvish Mushtaq, a Srinagar resident who knows how to walk the talk. On February 28, the 24-year-old engineer became the first Kashmiri to launch the Android app, Dial Kashmir, which lists over 500 contacts (addresses, email ids and phone numbers) of government departments and private offices and services. The app is divided into two categories -- Essential Services (hospitals, fire brigades, ambulances, newspapers, educational institutions, grievance cells and the municipal corporation) and Commercial Services (hotels, houseboats, Kashmiri products, pharmacies, NGOs, real estate organisations, tour and travel companies and wazas, the traditional Kashmiri cooks). Mushtaq is currently working on adding more categories, such as courier services, journalists, lawyers, doctors, BPOs, construction companies and so on.</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 16px; margin-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 5px;">

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 16px; margin-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 5px;">
“Technology fascinated me since a very young age. I still remember how excited I was when my parents got me a computer when I was in grade seven. I tinkered with the hardware and software until I knew it all in and out,” smiles Mushtaq over the telephone. She adds that her father, a retired Indian Foreign Officer and her mother, a homemaker, were very encouraging of their “tech geek” daughter.</div>
<div class="caption" style="background-color: white; color: #8a8a8a; font-family: arial; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px; margin-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 5px;">
<img alt="Mehvish Mushtaq" src="http://images.mid-day.com/2013/jun/Mehvish-Mushtaq.jpg" style="border-style: none; height: 647px; width: 500px;" title="Mehvish Mushtaq" /><br />
<strong>Mehvish Mushtaq is the first woman from Kashmir to have designed an Android app. Dial Kashmir helps locals report civic issues and access </strong><strong>emergency services</strong></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 16px; margin-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 5px;">
Mushtaq, who studied computer engineering from SSM College of Engineering and Technology at Pattan, Baramullah district in north Kashmir, did an online course in app development in January. “As part of the course, we had to design an app. That’s when I first thought of developing Dial Kashmir.”<br />
Unlike many other Indian cities, locals in Kashmir have no access to directories such as the Yellow Pages or an online portal where they could access information on essential services. “Unfortunately, it is a way of life here -- so often, when I need a contact detail, and if I don’t have access to the specific website, I find myself asking my friends, who in turn get in touch with their friends for help. Can you imagine the time lost? I wanted to design an app which put Kashmir at its residents’ fingertips.”</div>
<div class="caption" style="background-color: white; color: #8a8a8a; font-family: arial; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px; margin-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 5px;">
<img alt="" src="http://images.mid-day.com/2013/jun/dial-kashmir-1.jpg" style="border-style: none;" title="" /><br />
<strong>The Android app, Dial Kashmir, lists more than 500 contacts of essential and commercial services in Kashmir</strong></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 16px; margin-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 5px;">
It took Mushtaq two weeks to design the Android app. “The difficult part, predictably, was gathering data from government agencies and websites. When I was working on compiling the pincodes of various areas in Kashmir, I realised that the government website had them all wrong. So I had to reach out to friends and acquaintances on the social media to help me out. I put them up only a week ago.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 16px; margin-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 5px;">
Reactions to Dial Kashmir have taken Mushtaq by surprise. “People here call me the Android girl,” she laughs. “The app has been rated 4.7 out of 5 on Google Play and has seen over 1,000 downloads.” Dial Kashmir’s Facebook page, too, is flooded with locals raving about how the app helped them fill government forms, contact the municipal body to clear a dead carcass found at Jhelum and so on. “I have received many emails from people all across the country telling me that Dial Kashmir has encouraged them to build a similar app for their town or area. I believe someone in Kerala is working on a similar app now,” says Mushtaq.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 16px; margin-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 5px;">
She is not unaware of how most educated youngsters want to -- rather, have to -- move out of the Valley to build successful careers. “Employment opportunities here are not as good as those outside, but I want to set an example and change that. Kashmir needs its educated youth, and I want to set an example there.” Mushtaq says she wants to be an entrepreneur and work for the Valley. Her next app, she adds, will be something that could boost tourism in the state. “How can we speak of changing Kashmir when we cannot even stay back and work for it? Complaining hasn’t worked for us so far. Someone has to stop waiting for the government to step in and take Kashmir’s development in their own hands – and that could be me.” </div>

In 1989, when Kashmir’s endless armed strife was just taking root, Mehvish Mushtaq was born to forest officer Mushtaq Ahmad Hakak and housewife Farhat at Khanquah-e-Mou’la, a dense and dingy neighbourhood in downtown Srinagar. “The first encounter I remember occurred at Bohrikadal. One boy died,” recalls Farhat. The coming days proved eventful, shattering the valley’s decades of calm: National Conference activist Yusuf Halwai was gunned down to the left of her house and Jan Singh leader Tika Lal Taploo to the right; Rubaiya Sayeed’s kidnapping transformed the old city into a ‘liberated zone’.</div>
<div class="body" style="margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px;">
Mehvish’s parents shifted uptown, to the apparently more peaceful Barzullah, to bring up their two children. But soon the entire valley was converted into a battlefield. Brought up in the shadow of guns, Mehvish, who turns 24 today and who has a degree in Computer Science, has developed Kashmir’s first Android app. Launched on February 28 on the Google App Store, ‘Dial Kashmir’ is a one-stop source of information on essential services in the valley, including police and public offices.</div>
<div class="body" style="margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px;">
“The month-long online course was part of my degree. It took me two subsequent weeks to develop the software,” she says. Thrilled by the encouraging response —newspaper and television stories coupled with 12,000 downloads until last week as she claims — Mehvish floated Version 2 on May 22. It’s a treasure trove of information on automobile services, hotels, doctors, houseboats, NGOs, real estate, postal codes, and even Waazwaan, Kashmir’s party cuisine, with over a dozen mutton preparations. “Next time your tooth aches, it should take you a second to find a dentist,” she says.</div>
<div class="body" style="margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px;">
Planning a more comprehensive database, Mehvish has now fine-tuned her ambition towards creating an extensive Yellow Pages format that has every possible service, utility, public and private office with the latest addresses, phone numbers and email IDs. She hopes to realise her dream in a year. “It’ll have everything from consultancies, pharmacies and jewellery stores to beauty parlours and event managers.” Mehvish counts data collection as her biggest challenge, as nobody has, for example, drawn a list of the valley’s gourmet chefs.</div>
<div class="body" style="margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px;">
And what about the political turmoil? “That indeed is the biggest challenge but the brunt was faced more by my parents than me. Things were better by the time I joined college,” she says. She sounds prepared for both bouquets and brickbats. ‘Useless app’, posts Sarah Hayat while Shakir Rashid says: ‘Hats off to the developer.’</div>
<div class="body" style="margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px;">
“I have little passion for a private or government job. I just want to develop into a freelance software engineer,” she says about her future.<br />

The application named ‘Dial Kashmir’ contains over 500 contacts and provides users detailed information like addresses, phone numbers and email addresses of various essential services, and other departments in Kashmir.<br />
Mehvish believes it is a one-stop source of information on healthcare, education, transport and police etc., and eliminates the need to go through internet pages, official websites and directories.</div>

<div style="border-bottom-width: 0px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 0.75em;">
One of the realities of Kashmir today is the movement of thousands of Kashmiri youth to other parts of the country in order to seek better career opportunities for themselves, especially in the field of information technology.</div>
<div style="border-bottom-width: 0px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 0.75em;">
One young woman, Mehvish Mushtaq, 23, is determined to buck this trend. Instead, the one ambition she nurses is to create opportunities for young people at home, so that they could win laurels for themselves and for Kashmir.</div>
<div style="border-bottom-width: 0px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 0.75em;">
But who is Mehvish? She happens to be the first Kashmiri woman to develop an android application that goes by the name ‘Dial Kashmir’. A Srinagar girl, Mehvish did not receive an education in a fancy elite college or university. After completing her schooling from Presentation Convent School, she sat for the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) examination. Disappointment followed. Having failing to clear the AIEEE, Mehvish joined the SSM College of Engineering and Technology at Pattan, in Baramulla district of north Kashmir.</div>
<div style="border-bottom-width: 0px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 0.75em;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br style="border-bottom-width: 0px;" />“I was always interested in technology and fortunately my family supported me in my decision to go into this field. In fact, no one in the family has ever forced me to do anything,” says Mehvish, whose father has served as officer with the Indian Foreign Service. Her mother is a homemaker while her brother is pursuing his education in Delhi.<br />
<div style="border-bottom-width: 0px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 0.75em;">
Mehvish completed her three-year Bachelor’s course in 2012 and was wondering on what to do next when life took an unexpected turn. She puts it this way, “I was generally going through my Facebook profile, when an advertisement popped out and caught my attention. It seemed interesting so I clicked on it.”</p></div>
<div style="border-bottom-width: 0px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 0.75em;">
That was how Mehvish joined an online course for developing applications. Always a person who wanted to get deeper into subjects that interested her, she found herself immersed in the world of application development. “The course itself was not long – it was completed in one month. But during that course, we were given a project to develop an application,” Mehvish explains.</div>
<div style="border-bottom-width: 0px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 0.75em;">
The idea of ‘Dial Kashmir’ struck her at that juncture. Kashmir had no yellow pages or dedicated websites with reliable information unlike other regions of India. This meant that people faced a lot of problems trying to track down contact numbers of different departments and services. Mehvish, knowing well that there were many users of android mobile phones in the Valley, felt that if she came up with the right app she could be addressing an urgent need.</div>
<div style="border-bottom-width: 0px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 0.75em;">
After two weeks of hard work, without any assistance or help, ‘Dial Kashmir’ became a reality for Mehvish. It provides users detailed information such as addresses, phone numbers and email ids of various essential services and relevant government departments in Kashmir. It is a one-stop source for information on healthcare, education, transport, the police and so many other sectors and meant that no one now needs to spend time and tedious effort surfing through internet pages, official websites and directories. Her application has witnessed an average rating of 4.7 out of 5, with a thousand plus downloads on Google Play.</div>
<div style="border-bottom-width: 0px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 0.75em;">
It disturbs Mehvish to note the absence of proper educational and career opportunities for infotech aspirants, which in turn forces thousands of young people to leave home every year. “The absence of relevant colleges and universities is a big issue in Kashmir. Our youth are not able to develop their potential here,” she says.</div>
<div style="border-bottom-width: 0px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 0.75em;">
Mehvish has experienced for herself the innumerable hurdles that prevent Kashmir’s dynamic young innovators from realising their potential. But she would like them not to lose hope and keep dreaming big. Mehvish’s particular dream is to set up her own software company – which could provide employment opportunities for many and contribute to the world of infotech. Says she, “There is no point in just complaining that there are no opportunities. While that is certainly the case, I believe we have to find ways to create opportunities – not just wait endlessly for the government to act. It’s time we stood up and got noticed.”</div>
<div style="border-bottom-width: 0px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 0.75em;">
Mehvish is working to add more contacts to the application and upgrade it further. She is also contemplating on developing a dictionary for the Kashmiri language. Says the young woman firmly, “I want to contribute to my motherland by staying right here. I do not want to move out of Kashmir, either to study or to work.”</div>
<div style="border-bottom-width: 0px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 0.75em;">

One of the realities of Kashmir today is the movement of thousands of Kashmiri youth to other parts of the country in order to seek better career opportunities for themselves, especially in the field of information technology.</div>
<div style="background-color: #eeeeee; font-family: Georgia, Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; text-align: justify;">

<div style="background-color: #eeeeee; font-family: Georgia, Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; text-align: justify;">
One young woman, Mehvish Mushtaq, 23, is determined to buck this trend. Instead, the one ambition she nurses is to create opportunities for young people at home, so that they could win laurels for themselves and for Kashmir.</div>
<div style="background-color: #eeeeee; font-family: Georgia, Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; text-align: justify;">
But who is Mehvish? She happens to be the first Kashmiri woman to develop an android application that goes by the name ‘Dial Kashmir’.</div>
<div style="background-color: #eeeeee; font-family: Georgia, Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; text-align: justify;">
A Srinagar girl, Mehvish did not receive an education in a fancy elite college or university. After completing her schooling from Presentation Convent School, she sat for the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) examination.</div>
<div style="background-color: #eeeeee; font-family: Georgia, Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; text-align: justify;">
Disappointment followed. Having failing to clear the AIEEE, Mehvish joined the SSM College of Engineering and Technology at Pattan, in Baramulla district of north Kashmir.</div>
<div style="background-color: #eeeeee; font-family: Georgia, Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; text-align: justify;">
“I was always interested in technology and fortunately my family supported me in my decision to go into this field. In fact, no one in the family has ever forced me to do anything,” says Mehvish, whose father has served as officer with the Indian Foreign Service. Her mother is a homemaker while her brother is pursuing his education in Delhi.</div>
<div style="background-color: #eeeeee; font-family: Georgia, Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; text-align: justify;">
Mehvish completed her three-year Bachelor’s course in 2012 and was wondering on what to do next when life took an unexpected turn. She puts it this way, “I was generally going through my Facebook profile, when an advertisement popped out and caught my attention. It seemed interesting, so I clicked on it.”</div>

<h1 class="art_head" style="border-bottom-style: none; color: #3f3f3f; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 1.4em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 10px; vertical-align: middle;">
Android Vs IOS: Who Is the Leading Apps Development Platform? <span style="font-size: 1em; font-weight: 400;"> by John Murphy</span></h1>
<div>
<span style="font-size: 1em; font-weight: 400;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px; padding: 0px 0px 7px;">
There's an ongoing debate in blogosphere regarding who's the biggest - Android or iOS? Every tidbit of competitive information becomes the source of a whirlwind of further speculation.<b>Android apps development</b> has certainly caught up with Apple's and today, both have almost the same quantity of third-party programs. Some reports state Apple, with its quality of apps, is slightly ahead while others declare Google to be the king. But it's childish to have such data obsession, especially in isolation; rather, getting a clearer idea of where the world's top two mobile operating systems stand with respect to multiple data points will give cynics and level-heads some food for thought. So lets find out who gets to wear the crown in the mobile platform duel.</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px; padding: 0px 0px 7px;">
Which apps platform sells the maximum smartphones?</div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px; padding: 0px 0px 7px;">
Android smartphones outsold the iPhone by a considerable margin for the period November 2012 to February 2013: 52 percent against 44 percent. A noteworthy point here is that past studies haven't been all that conclusive. Earlier last year, the same report showed iOS to be in the lead. It can be safely assumed that the results show a momentary trend rather than a permanent reality.</div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px; padding: 0px 0px 7px;">
Comscore also shows sales data to be in Android's favor which stands at 52 percent compared to iOS's 38 percent. But these numbers are for the US alone. What about the rest of the world?</div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px; padding: 0px 0px 7px;">
Worldwide smartphone sales</div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px; padding: 0px 0px 7px;">
<b><u>Phone companies using Android are selling more units than the Apple iPhone. According to IDC, Android sat pretty with a 70 percent market share whereas the iPhone had a mere 21 percent. That explains the growing number of Android app developers from all corners of the globe, including the likes of 23-year old Mehvish Mushtaq who belongs to Kashmir, and has recently shot into the limelight with an app titled 'Dial Kashmir' with an average rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars in the Google Play Store.</u></b></div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px; padding: 0px 0px 7px;">
What about tablets?</div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px; padding: 0px 0px 7px;">
The shipment data for tablets is hard to unearth compared to phones; here, we have to be content with IDC's estimates for 2012, which released on December 5. Though 7-inch Android tablets were in demand, eating away into the iPad's share, iOS was able to retain top spot in tablet operating systems. The numbers: 54 percent for iOS and 43 percent for Android.</div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px; padding: 0px 0px 7px;">
Who is selling more?</div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px; padding: 0px 0px 7px;">
Which phone manufacturer is selling more worldwide? IDC picked Samsung, which had a 29 percent stake in smartphone shipments, as the leading manufacturer (unit-wise) in the last quarter of 2012, followed by Apple at 22 percent. Are 800,000 Android apps behind Samsung's success? That's a topic better left for another day.</div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px; padding: 0px 0px 7px;">
In the US though, iPhone shipments outdid Samsung according to Strategy Analytics. Interestingly, the research firm's numbers were for “mobile phonesâ€, and hence may take into consideration feature phones in addition to smartphones. Anyways, the competition here was more fierce with Apple and Samsung generating 34 and 32 percent respectively.</div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px; padding: 0px 0px 7px;">
With Amazon taking <b>Android app development</b> to a new high by introducing its Appstore to 200 more countries, the war is going to get bloody appealing.</div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px; padding: 0px 0px 7px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px; padding: 0px 0px 7px;">

In short, it is a “one stop source” for essential information on various utilities like, healthcare, education, transport, police and many more.</div>

She felt a need to develop such an application because unlike outside where there are many apps and websites which contain such information, Kashmir had still none. So, now onwards no one needs to go through tedious process of surfing and searching on internet, directories and websites.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Calibri; font-size: 17px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 10px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">
Asking about developing this application, she replied that she had done the online course of android based application and at the end of which, she had to develop something as a part of project, and then she got the idea about creating this new feature. So this is how she developed “helpful Kashmir centric application”, with the help of her “yes actually, I can” attitude.</div>

"I am happy to do something useful for the people of Kashmir," Hakak told Khabar South Asia. "More importantly, the application will be handy to tourists and others visiting Kashmir. We are living in an information age and at least one member in each family owns an Android phone."</div>

"In absence of such an important application before, I used to spend a lot of time surfing websites of government departments to find addresses and contact numbers of officials, but often in vain," Shafat Ahmad, a Srinagar school teacher, told Khabar.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 1.154em; line-height: 1.2em; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px;">

She did a month-long online course on Android application designing in January. "I had a keen interest to develop the application. I worked for about six to eight hours a day to complete it," she said.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 1.154em; line-height: 1.2em; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px;">
Her father, Mushtaq Ahmad Hakak, a retired Indian Forest Service official, is proud. "She is an ardent learner and a committed worker. She worked hard to accomplish the desired goal. I am proud of her achievement," he told Khabar.</div>

Her achievement has inspired many. "I am encouraged by her commendable job. Under her guidance I plan to make an Android application on 'Yearly calendar' of Jammu and Kashmir," Salim Javid, a computer science graduate from north Kashmir, told Khabar.</div>

<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.796875px; padding: 0px;">
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.796875px; padding: 0px;">
हालांकि रियाज़ ये भी कहते हैं कि कश्मीर में अब भी इंटरनेट इस्तेमाल करनेवाले कम हैं, और ऐन्ड्रॉएड फोन का उपयोग करनेवाले और भी कम.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.796875px; padding: 0px;">

<div style="border: 0px; color: #444444; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Mehvish Mushtaq with a B.E. in Computer Science, is a 23 year old computer engineer living in Kashmir. She has the distinction of being the first in the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir to come up with a novel Android app, Dial Kashmir.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #444444; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
She states on her Facebook page that she does not want to be second to anyone; only the first. According to her, she was inspired to come up with this app since there are similar apps giving information on other regions but none focused on Kashmir. Mehvish lives in uptown Barzulla area and is of the opinion that locals and outsiders will find Dial Kashmir immensely useful. She claims that the application has been downloaded over a thousand times on Google Play Store and has a rating of 4.7 out of 5.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #444444; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
According to the Outlook magazine, Mehvish enrolled for an online Android application designing course in January. Coupled with her educational skills and an 'I can' attitude, she came up with the very Kashmir-centric app. She said it took her two weeks to develop the app. An avid music lover, Mehvish is a technology buff and has always dreamt of developing something that would be of help to her fellow citizens. She completed her B.E. from the SSM College of Engineering and Technology in Pattan area of Baramulla District. Confident in her tone, she said in an interview to PTI that girls of Kashmir can achieve anything they set their minds on.</div>

With Dial Kashmir, you can access information of departments, officials and public utilities in the State such as addresses, phone numbers and email IDs. The app provides comprehensive information on healthcare, transport, police and education sectors from a single point; saving people time they would otherwise have spent surfing the web.</div>

Mehvish says the response is encouraging and that she is at work on refining it still further to pack in more information.</div>
